New Satirical Play Debuts: The Dumbed Poet – A Permissive Perspective

A Thought-Provoking Exploration of Creativity, Censorship, and the Power of Art

The much-anticipated new play: ‘The Dumbed Poet – A Permissive Perspective’ is set to make its premiere at The Melville Centre, Abergavenny on 6th November 2025. Written by acclaimed Poet and Artivist turned Playwright, Mark Christmas, The Dumbed Poet is a sharp, imaginative satire that questions the boundaries of artistic expression in an increasingly homogenized world.

Set in a dystopian society where creativity is regulated and outsider poetry outlawed, the play follows the journey of its titular protagonist—a once-brilliant poet who has to be “dumbed down” by a government intent on suppressing free speech.

“This play is both a celebration of creativity and a warning against complacency,” says Simon Griffiths, who helms the production. “The Dumbed Poet challenges us to consider how much we’re willing to sacrifice for the sake of conformity—and whether art still has the power to disrupt and transform.”

Featuring a dynamic cast of actors, innovative staging and an unforgettable soundtrack, The Dumbed Poet promises to captivate audiences with its depth, and striking relevance to modern times.

The Performances are also being filmed as part of an ongoing documentary production following the last major project Mark Christmas was involved with. The Abandoned Soldier.
