SUMMARY:Maybe Dick
DESCRIPTION:MAYBE DICK\nBy John Hewer\nBased on the novel ‘Moby-Dick’ by Herman Melville\nDirected by Bruce Knight \nHerman Melville’s classic tale of revenge and retribution is retold in this inventive\, comic retelling on the high seas from the company behind ‘Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show’ and ‘Dracula! One Bloody Fang After Another’. \nNantucket\, 1841. Ishmael signs on to the Pequod\, and witnesses the perils of nature\, obsession\, punning and physical comedy\, as Captain Ahab conducts a reckless pursuit of the savage white whale\, Moby Dick. \nAll plot will be lampooned. All jokes will be harpooned. \n“Absolutely brought the house down” – Lincolnshire World \n“‘Carry On Moby Dick'” – North West End\n“You will be hit with wave after wave of silliness\, leaving a warm glow and a great big smile.” – Review Culture\n“You don’t need to know Moby-Dick to get the jokes. And there are plenty of jokes.” – Voicebox\n“This is fun knockabout stuff; we are never more than 30 seconds from the next punchline and Hewer has excellent comic timing and a winning naïveté.” – North West End\n“Hewer manages to play all the parts and maintain narrative coherence along with a stream of jokes and the odd musical interlude.” – Chiswick Calendar\n“The jokes came thick and fast. We left with huge\, aching smiles.” – TheatreFest \nNB: 12 + Age Restriction.

SUMMARY:Stand-Up Comedy Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ever fancied doing Stand-Up?\nNoel James is a professional comedian.  His stand up comedy workshop does not teach people how to be funny\, but instead provides the tools needed by a new act to deliver their material\, to sell their performance to the audience\, and to overcome fear and anxiety. \nIncluded in this two hour taster session is a 30 page booklet which outlines the history as well as various aspects of comedy.\nWhat techniques can be used to make a joke funny? Misdirection/reveal\, wordplay\, juxtaposition\, transposition. \nHow should a comedian address a crowd ?  Head up\, face towards the back of the room\, with clear enunciation. plenty of volume and steady pace.  All aspects will be covered\, from the technical – how to handle a microphone.  To the business – what is the comedy ‘ circuit’ and how does one get a ‘gig’? \nThis taster session will hopefully lead to a longer course where students will be invited to bring in their own written ‘set’\, rehearse in the theatre and workshop your material before the group. \nThe environment provided is creative\, constructive and non-judgemental. \nThis session is conducted in English but Welsh speakers are welcome. \nSpaces only £5.00 – Get in while you can! \nEveryone’s got to start somewhere\, so if you want a laugh\, or if you want to make others laugh…please do sign up.  Email melvillecentrearts@gmail.com to reserve your space.

Always a hit with audiences\, her friendly\, instantly likeable persona\, makes her an ideal MC or opener. Her credits include appearances on BBC Radio Wales and as a finalist in the Welsh Unsigned Standup Awards. As well as performing her sharp one-liners and observational material as stand-up performer she has also penned a play which was performed at the Swansea Grand Theatre by Fluellen Theatre Company in 2018\, based on her experiences in comedy called “Tonight’s Performance Begins In…”. \n  \nReviews & Testimonials…\n“Smashing\, funny act – full of great ideas and beautifully delivered” – Barbara Nice\n“A joke machine” – Jamie Owen\, BBC Radio Wales\n“Funny quirky and instantly likeable” – Ffandango Comedy Club\n“Always a hit” – Dolly Chicken Comedy\n“Sharp writing and darkly relatable observations – Highly recommended!” – Howl\n“The audience loved her\, she was born to be funny – more than funny\, clever funny!” – Cheryl Beer\nOur first act is Drew Taylor. South Wales based Drew Taylor has been making waves all over the UK comedy scene. A sharp observational style combined with a strong stage presence combine with a lovely slow Welsh voice makes for a naturally funny comic who’s just great listen to. In total command of the room his relaxed and assured person is uber funny. \n“A guy destined for comedy greatness!”  Theatr Gwaun\, Fishguard\n‘A lovely combination of charm\, confidence and great jokes!’  Nathan Caton\n“Clever stuff!” – Bath Echo “A guy destined for comedy greatness!” – Theatr Gwaun “Just go and see Drew Taylor!” – The Small Space Theatre\nOur next act will be Phil Cooper – Charming Welsh comedian Phil Cooper brings a unique blend of storytelling and smart jokes to any stage. His passion for acting stretches beyond the confines of just comedy; his versatility and readiness to learn new skills have opened up other avenues\, including presenting and musical entertainment. \nHis most recent gigs include the Glee Club; Sensatori Hotels; the Balham Banana Cabaret\, London; The Stand Comedy Clubs; the Atlantic Fringe Festival\, Nova Scotia. \n‘Noel James is a lovely comic’ – Kate Copstick\, The Scotsman 2007 “The funniest joke I’ve ever heard – Almost certainly it was by Noel James. Go and see him live to hear it.” – Jon Richardson\, The Guardian 2017 “Surreal Welsh comic Noel James lives and dies by wordplay\, his delivery a gabble of consciousness that skips from pun to giddy flight of fantasy with ill-coordinated abandon […] Any stand-up can struggle to connect with an audience. But James betrays the soul of a poet and accomplishes it with such rare panache and commitment that it approaches art.” – Jay Richardson\, March 2010
