DESCRIPTION:Graham Hartill moved to the Black Mountains in 1992. \nHe has published seven co-translations with Wu Fusheng (of the University of Utah) from classical Chinese. \nGraham teaches post-graduate students Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes for the Metanoia Institute in London \nand was a writer-in-residence at HMP Parc\, Bridgend.\n \n\nclare e. potter is a poet and radio presenter who studied and taught in The Deep South (USA). DESCRIPTION:Michael W. Thomas’s latest poetry collection is A Time for Such a Word (Black Pear Press). His latest novel is The Erkeley Shadows (KDP / Swan Village Reporter). His work has appeared in\, among others\, The Antioch Review\, Critical Survey\, The London Magazine and the TLS. He is on the editorial board of Crossroads: A Journal of English Studies (University of Bialystok\, Poland). \n  \nEmily Cotterill is a Cardiff based poet\, originally from Alfreton in Derbyshire. Her debut collection Significant Wow was published by Seren in February 2025. The collection explores themes of celebrity\, story-telling and pop culture. The collection follows the 2019 pamphlet The Day of the Flying Ants (smith|doorstop) which was part of Carol Ann Duffy’s Laureate’s Choice selection. Her work has appeared widely in print and online including in The North\, Poetry Wales\, bath magg.

DESCRIPTION:Phil Bowen is a poet\, performer\, biographer and playwright. \nSalt published Nowhere’s Far – New & Selected Poems in 2008. His biography of the Mersey Poets\, A Gallery to Play To was republished by Liverpool University Press also in 2008. His plays include A Handful of Rain\, (an imagined meeting between Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas)\, and Anything But Love\, an adaptation of the writings of Dorothy Parker and the lyrics of Dorothy Fields. His poem ‘Blue Docs’ won The Quaterly Prize for the 2023 Spring Issue of The Lyric (est 1921) Recent work includes ‘Love Somehow’ – a multi award winning film about Caitlin Thomas and the long poem ‘All the Stuff ‘\, recently curated by The Poetry Archive. \n  \nJLM Morton is from Gloucestershire in the west of England. \nHer poetry has appeared in Poetry Review\, Rialto\, Magma\, Mslexia\, The London Magazine\, Berlin Lit\, Anthropocene\, Bad Lilies\, Modron\, The Sunday Telegraph and elsewhere. Highly commended by the Forward Prizes\, she is also a Pushcart Prize nominee and winner of the Laurie Lee\, Geoffrey Dearmer and Poetry Archive Worldview prizes. Her first poetry collection is Red Handed\, a Poetry Society Book of the Year out now with Broken Sleep Books (2024). Juliette has collaborated with musicians\, artists and field recordists and held residencies at the Cotswold Water Park\, Stroudwater Textile Trust\, Corinium Museum and Sladebank Woods.

DESCRIPTION:Robert Sheppard has been publishing poetry since 1979\, and he has two retrospective collections\, Twentieth Century Blues (Salt 2008) and a selected poems History or Sleep (Shearsman 2015).He has published collaborative work with Bob Cobbing\, Patricia Farrell\, Pete Clarke. Robert is also a critic and an editor. Robert  Sheppard lives in Liverpool. \nAbigail Parry’s poems have been set to music\, translated into Spanish and Japanese. She has won the Ballymaloe Prize\, the Troubadour Prize\, and an Eric Gregory Award. Her first collection\, Jinx (Bloodaxe) was shortlisted for the Forward Prize and the Seamus Heaney Centre First Collection Poetry Prize. Her second collection\, I Think We’re Alone Now\, is also published by Bloodaxe Books. \nGareth Writer-Davies was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize (2014 and 2017); commended in the Prole Laureate Competition (2015 and 2021) and Prole Laureate for 2017. He is a winner of the Wirral Festival Poetry Competition (2023) and publications include: Bodies (Indigo Dreams) The Lover’s Pinch( Arenig Press) He was a Hawthornden Fellow.

He taught at Copenhagen University (1969-82)\, and was editor of the cultural magazine Planet: The Welsh Internationalist (1990-2006). A poet and essayist\, his latest books are Tsunami Days (essays) and Dunes of Cwm Rheidol (poems). He is also a blues guitarist and has played in a number of bands\, including Y Bechgyn Drwg/The Bad Boys with Twm Morys\, Iwan Llwyd and Nigel Jenkins. \nSimone Mansell Broome is a Welsh-born writer. She studied English with American Studies at Sussex University\, qualified both as a teacher of Speech and Drama and of EFL Simone’s poems have been read on Radio 4\, including BBC’s ‘Poetry Please’\, ITV and Radio Wales. Fifty of Simone’s poems were translated into Romanian in 2020 as part of a Bucharest University M.A. dissertation.   She has published three full collections of poetry. \nNigel Jarrett is the author of eight books. His first poetry collection\, Miners At The Quarry Pool\, was published by Parthian. This year Cockatrice Books published his second poetry collection\, Gwyriad. Nigel Jarrett is a winner of the Rhys Davies Prize for short fiction and the inaugural Templar Shorts Prize. For many years\, he was chief music critic of the South Wales Argus. \nHe reviews poetry for Acumen magazine and also writes for Jazz Journal (a regular column called Count Me In)\, Wales Arts Review. \n

Chris died 21st July 2021.\n\nJanet Sutherland was born in Wiltshire and grew up on a dairy farm\, she is the author of five poetry collections\, most recently The Messenger House (Shearsman Books\, 2023) which is about her great great grandfather’s travels to Serbia in the 1840’s with his friend\, Mr Gutch\, who was a Queen’s Messenger. George Davies\, her great-great-grandfather\, grew up in Crickhowell. Her poems are widely anthologised and are published in magazines such as Poetry Ireland Review\, New Statesman\, The Spectator and The North.  A critical essay on the poet Charles Reznikoff appeared as an afterword to two new editions of his work\, Holocaust\, in the UK (Five Leaves Publishing\, 2009) and USA (Black Sparrow Press\, 2007). She won the 2017 Kent and Sussex Poetry Prize and received a Hawthornden Fellowship for 2018.  She has an MA in American Poetry from the University of Essex. She lives in Lewes\, East Sussex.\nIan Brinton’s most recent publications include Language and Death\, a translation of poems by Philippe Jaccottet (Equipage\, 2022)\, Paul Valéry’s Selected Poems (Muscaliet Press\, 2021\, prefaced by Michael Heller)\, Paris Scenes\, a translation of Baudelaire’s ‘Tableaux Parisiens’\, (Two Rivers Press\, 2021) and Islands of Voices\, the selected poems of Douglas Oliver (Shearsman Books\, 2020). His translation of de Nerval’s Les Chimères will appear from Muscaliet Press in 2023. She has taught creative writing in UK\, Greece\, Sierra Leone and now works with asylum seekers\, teaching English and cooking. \nJosephine Scott was born in Northumberland but spent her childhood in Australia. In When Rain Becomes Memory (her third collection\, following Sparkle and Dance and Rituals) poetry is rooted in matters historical and domestic concerning her coastal place of residence\, whilst also responding and sensually exploring the minutia of daily life.Poems have recently been included in This Cullercoats (Iron Press\, 2019) and poetry magazines throughout Europe and the United Kingdom.  She is a graduate of Northumbria University. \nFrank Olding writes in Welsh\, reads his work in both English and Welsh.  Frank was poet in residence at the Art Exhibition of the National Eisteddfod in Ebbw Vale in 2010 and is a member of the Gorsedd of Bards. He was honoured with an Ovate at the 2011 Eisteddfod in recognition of his services to Wales.                                             Frank Olding’s new collection of poems Eilun\, published by Gwasg y Bwthyn\, is rooted deeply in the magical and suggestive relationships between history and mythology.

Her music comes raw and unfiltered\, aching with the kind of nostalgia that comes with rural\, rugged places. She weaves satisfying guitar-driven riffs with hooky melodies and she shows the ability in her sophisticated lyricism to reach out to people and make them feel. Her strive for depth and grit evokes the singer-songwriter movement of late 90’s as well as contemporaries such as SOAK\, Marika Hackman and Holly Humberstone.\nDespite music composition and performance being prominent in her life from a very young age\, Rona Mac’s project as a solo musician began in 2020 and she has since released a DIY Debut Album ‘Sheelah’ and EP ‘Shades Of Ham’\, exhibiting her captivating talent with music production. DESCRIPTION:As part of Abergavenny Writing Festival we’re celebrating inclusivity and diversity in the world of writing in Wales.\nThe Writing Festival kicks off social proceedings with an accessible spoken-word open-mic event here in the cosy and easy to access bar area.  The event will be hybrid so both audience and participants are able to join either in person or via a zoom link.  There will be closed captioning and BSL interpretation for the performance.\nThis event is delivered with the support of write4word through its ‘Press Speak Not Delete’ project\, creating a hybrid of physical performance and digital channels to develop a more diverse and accessible arts sector. \nThe open-mic programme is limited to 8 participants in the physical venue and 8 participants on-line. DESCRIPTION:Poetry Upstairs for: TUESDAY 27th September \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join us – another three amazing poets to listen to and chat to… bar and doors open 6:30\, performance begins 7pm. \n  \nNicholas Murray is a freelance author and journalist based in Wales and London.  Born in Liverpool; the author of several literary biographies including lives of Franz Kafka\, Aldous Huxley\, Bruce Chatwin\, Andrew Marvell and Matthew Arnold\, five collections of poems\, and two novels.  His biography of Matthew Arnold was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1997 and his biography of Aldous Huxley was shortlisted for the Marsh Biography Prize in 2003.  The biography of Franz Kafka has been translated into nine languages. Nicholas Murray is a regular contributor of poems\, essays and reviews to a wide range of newspapers and literary magazines and has many collection of published poems. \n  \n  \nJemma L King is a poet based in West Wales. She won the Terry Hetherington Young Writer of the Year Award in 2011 and in 2014 was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Wales Book of the Year for her poetry collection ‘The Shape of a Forest’ (Parthian Books). Her second book ‘The Undressed’ was released by Parthian Books in 2014. She is a reviewer of contemporary literature for numerous publications and teaches literature and creative writing at Aberystwyth University. She is a founding member of the Centre for Women\, Writing and Literary Culture. \n  \n  \nCharles Wilkinson: The Snowman and Other Poems (Iron Press\, 1987) Ag & Au – 36 page pamphlet (Flarestack Poets\, 2013). This publication formed part of a submission that helped to win Flarestack the Michael Marks Award for poetry publishing. The Glazier’s Choice (Eyewear – forthcoming 2019); shortlisted for The Beverly Prize. Charles Wilkinson’s early work was published in magazines\, including Delta\, English\, Iron\, Littack\, and The Human World. \nHis more recent poems have appeared in over fifty publications\, including Envoi\, Poetry Wales\, Poetry Salzburg (Austria)\, Tears in the Fence\, The SHOp (Eire)\,Crannog (Eire)\, The Interpreter’s House\, Magma\, Fire\, Stand\, Scintilla\, Shearsman\, Pennine Platform\, Other Poetry\, Earthlines (The Two Ravens Press)\, The Warwick Review\, Under the Radar\, New Writer\, The Reader\, The Iron Book of New Humorous Verse\, Entanglements (The Two Ravens Press)\, The Aesthetica Annual\, Snow Lit\, Revand Otoliths (Australia)\, as well as in American magazines such as Gargoyle\, The Madison Review\, The Raintown Review\, Lummox\, Futures Trading\, and The San Pedro River Review. \n  \nPlease bring £5 to pay on the door\, but DO pre-register to ensure your seat! The full sequence of Fulmar’s Wings (75 poems) is due from Knives Forks & Spoons Press in 2021. A novel\, A Sound Like Angels Weeping was published by Brimstone Press in 2012. Hilton was born near Manchester in 1945 and has degrees in English Literature and in Social Work. From 1972 until 1998 he served as a social worker\, mostly in Worcestershire. Between 2007 and 2017\, he studied music composition\, and completed a number of contemporary chamber music pieces\, some of which have been performed. In 2017\, he moved to Bridport in Dorset with his partner\, the writer Kim Taplin. \n  \nAnn Drysdale now lives in South Wales and has been a hill farmer\, water-gypsy\, newspaper columnist and single parent – not necessarily in that order. Her poems have been published in several of the Potcake Chapbooks. Her seventh volume of poetry\, Vanitas\, has recently joined a mixed list of published writing\, including memoir\, essays and a gonzo guidebook to the City of Newport. \n  \nMike McNamara was born in Ireland but lives in South Wales. He had his first collection Overhearing The Incoherent published in 1997. His poetry\, short stories and drawings have been published in mags in Ireland\, North America\, Canada\, Singapore and the UK. Mike also had a selection of poems published in The Pterodactyl’s Wing (Parthian\, 2003). His latest collection Loose Cannon is published by Subterranean Blue Press. \n  \n

He won the Welsh International Poetry Competition in 2011 and was placed 2nd in the 2018 competition\, was a PenFro Poetry Competition prizewinner in 2019\, and a prize-winning poet in both the 2015 Troubadour International Poetry Competition and the 2011 Grist Poetry Prize. David’s pamphlets are Human Engineering\, (Thynks Publishing\, 2013) and No Need For Candles\, (Red Squirrel Press\, 2016). He runs Pop-up Poets and is an active supporter and advocate for Wirral Libraries. His most recent 2020 collection\, Heft\, is published by Red Squirrel Press. \nChris Hall’s published work include\, Bneath Cragshaddo (WYSIWYG Chapbooks)\, Balladz f Bedlam (Stonebridge).The metaphysical poem A Journey was published in Scintilla and two poems Five Surrealist Paintings and Dewi Stone appeared in the Spring 2014 edition of Tears in the Fence. Work is to the fore in The Lonely Crowd and Leg Avant.                                                             His 2019 collection\, No Fish\, is published by Collective Press. \nDes Mannay is a Welsh writer of colour. His first poetry collection\, Sod ’em – and tomorrow is published by Waterloo Press. He is co-editor of The Angry Manifesto poetry journal. Winner -‘rethinkyourmind’ poetry competition (2015)\, LIT-UP poetry competition (2019). 2nd/ highly commended – Disability Arts Cymru poetry Competition (2015). ‘Gold Award’ – Creative Futures Literary Awards (2015). His work is featured in 26 poetry anthologies \n

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second Poetry Upstairs at The Melville Centre! \nTuesday  31st May 7pm            £5 Entry \n  \nNorman Jope (Plymouth)            Melisande Fitzsimmons  (Plymouth)                Mike Jenkins (Merthyr) \n  \nPlease contact us to register your place (you must book in advance)\, then pay on the door as usual. \nTo register\, email info@melvillecentre.org.uk and send your full name/s and telephone contact numbers\, or call Emma on 01873 853167.\nWe regret we cannot admit anyone who has not registered beforehand\, as we need to know numbers ahead of the evening. \n  \nNorman Jope was born in 1960 in Plymouth\, where he lives again after residence in a number of other locations (most recently Bristol and Budapest). \nHe has published For the Wedding-Guest (Stride\, 1997)\, The Book of Bells and Candles (Waterloo Press\, 2009)\, Dreams of the Caucasus (Shearsman Books\, 2010) \nand Aphinar (Waterloo Press\, 2012) and his poetry has appeared in many magazines and webzines in the UK\, Europe\, North America and Australasia. \nWith the late Ian Robinson\, he co-edited the anthology In the Presence of Sharks: New Poetry from Plymouth (Phlebas\, 2006). \nHe was the editor of the literary and cultural magazine Memes and co-edited a Critical Companion to Richard Berengarten (Salt\, 2011; reissued by Shearsman in 2016); \ncritical work has appeared in Tears in the Fence\, Terrible Work\, Stride and other outlets. He currently works as an administrator in higher education. \n  \nMélisande Fitzsimons writes a modern conversational poem that is alive to changing states and conditions. The reader is taken on a journey through narrative obsessions that moves from the ordinary to the extraordinary in its exposition of what it is to live as a migrant and internationalist. This is essentially the poetry of exile in Brexit Britain where ‘skin mutates into membrane\, too sticky to breathe’… ‘with barbed wire rasps / scratching at the whitewash’ mixed with an otherworldliness\, bodies being cleansed\, and family stories redolent of home.  Her collections include A Language of Spies (Crafty Little Press 2019) and Life Here is Full of Tomorrows (Leafe Press 2021). \n  \nMike Jenkins is an award-winning Welsh poet and author.\nHe is widely published and is much in demand for his lively performances and writing workshops. He has performed at the Hay Festival and the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival and \nhas read and tutored at Ty Newydd\, the National Writers’ Centre for Wales.\nMike frequently appears on radio and television and is known among Cardiff City football fans as the club’s ‘unofficial poet’. \n
