RHOLBEN

The Melville Theatre The Melville Centre, Pen-y-Pound, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, United Kingdom

Rholben’s interpretations of the traditional music of Wales are full of tenderness, wit, and deep emotion. The sublime voice of Siriol Davies, who grew up in South Wales, is supported by thoughtful guitar, melodic double bass, sweeping, soaring strings, and sumptuous vocal harmonies. Siriol takes the Welsh language songs and the tunes of her childhood and, together with some of the most highly respected and sought after traditional musicians to be found, creates a sound that somehow feels light and current whilst also feeling as weighty and as old as the hill from which they take their name. Ffurfiwyd Rholben yn [...]

The Melville Theatre The Melville Centre, Pen-y-Pound, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, United Kingdom

Music that is a living sound track to the Welsh Marches. Acoustic guitar, voice and cello combine to create the atmosphere of the landscapes that inspire them. Ian Mann's (The Jazz Mann online magazine) description spoke that the 'filmic quality of the work is very much rooted in the restless beauty, and at times unforgiving nature, of the Welsh Marches where they are both based.' Formed in 2014 improvising duo Charlie Beresford (acoustic guitar/voice) and Sonia Hammond (cello) both herald from the Welsh Marches, a wild landscape that has left a deep imprint on the sounds they make.
